ACCURACY OF FORECASTING

WindSim Power Line (WPL) a State-of-the-Art Forecast solution for Overhead Line Operations. An artificial intelligence (AI) based Dynamic Line Real-time/Forecast Rating System that helps utilities optimize grid capacity without extra CAPEX.

SCALABILITY & TRANSFERABILITY

WPL is a robust and resilient SaaS solution that is complementary with sensor-based systems, integrates with already deployed sensors and legacy systems, and can scale and enable increased grid capacity.

FLEXIBILITY & EFFICIENCY WITH ADVANCED SIMULATIONS

WPL gives users greater grid intelligence by providing enhanced data directly to control rooms and allowing operators to make decisions based on reliable data with less uncertainty about real-time ampacity limits. WPL can be deployed as a stand-alone application or fully integrated into the customer Energy Management System (EMS).

Key Features

Real-time
span-by-span monitoring

WindSim Power Line combines local weather monitoring, gridded mesoscale forecasts, CFD modeling specialized for complex-terrain, and the Generalized Line Ampacity State Solver (GLASS, developed by Idaho National Laboratory) single integrated DLR system.

Adheres to
IEEE-738 & CIGRE

Conductor temperature and line ratings are computed in WPL using IEEE-738 and CIGRE. These two approaches are the most common ways of accounting for the impacts of weather on the physical conditions of the transmission lines. These calculation standards are implemented in GLASS software, which is used in WPL.

Short & medium-range
forecasts

Forecasts are produced for short (1 to 3 hrs) and medium-range (several days ahead). WPL currently produces DLR forecasts by downscaling gridded weather forecasts, such as from HRRR and other private mesoscale weather forecast providers.

Identification of
critical spans

In the initial phase of deployment, WindSim Power identifies critical spans to inform and select optimal locations for installing weather monitoring systems. When deployed in real-time, WPL tracks and periodically reports on critical spans to let users of the system know where to focus more closely on asset monitoring.

Software as a Service (SaaS)

The Software as a Service enables faster and more secure deployment and integration of WPL. Users can access the data through the WPL web-based interface. The web interface allows users to view data associated with WPL, including forecasted gridded and time series meteorological data, DLR, and ambient adjusted ratings.

Installs without
disruption to service

A minimal set of weather stations are required for full system deployment. No other hardware is needed for a complete solution. The installation of weather stations does not require any line outages as the weather stations are typically installed on transmission poles instead of on the conductors.

Scale with
Fewer Sensors

As a DLR solution, WPL is a unique, proprietary and scalable technology requiring fewer sensors on the transmissions line; as a result, it saves operational costs, enables increased grid capacity, and bridges to future demands.

Integrates with
legacy systems

Monitored data can be accessed through an operational data feed, such as a web-based service, or downloaded directly from the WindSim Power Line dashboard. WPL can be directly integrated with Energy Management Systems (EMS).

Increase capacity with
no extra CAPEX

WPL is a grid-enhancing technology that enables lines to be utilized more efficiently. WPL is an indirect, weather-based SaaS solution that doesn’t require expensive hardware.
